Sensory Friendly Scenes
Traveling and outings with a child with special needs can be an overwhelming and stressful experience for parents and families. There may be issues with accessibility, disability and sensitivity awareness, lengthy lines, loud noises, large crowds, dietary needs or too much visual stimuli. With all of these important factors to consider, we know that with our children who have sensory integrated disorders or cognitive disabilities, the chance for melt-downs are high. For these reasons and more, many families avoid attending community events or having to travel, and as a result, don’t have the opportunity to enjoy vacationing or recreational activities. Fortunately, sensitivity and disability awareness is growing rapidly in our society. Many organizations are willing to make their establishments more accessible and disability friendly, so that individuals and families of children with disabilities feel comfortable participating and welcomed as patrons. This section provides insightful information about such organizations, but it also provides tips and ideas for making all outings fun for everyone in the family.
