What is disability etiquette? It's how we behave when we are around a person(s) with a disability. When uncertain of what that behavior might be, simply stick to the “Golden or Platinum Rules,” as you would with anyone.
“Golden Rule – treat others the way you wish to be treated.”
“Platinum Rule – treat others the way they wish to be treated.”
Individuals with disabilities are people who want to be treated with respect and decency just as you do. However, it can sometimes be hard to know how to help someone appropriately without inadvertently offending them. Having disability etiquette means having awareness and regard for all members of the disability community. It means addressing someone in a manner they prefer, and maintaining a respectful, objective, and inclusive mentality. When in doubt, use "Person First Language."
Our friends at Family Network on Disabilities created a tip sheet on "Person First Language." Please read their SCI-FI tip-booklet containing tips on "Creating Family Friendly Communities, Person First Language, and Bullying Prevention." SCI-FI Tip Booklet
