You may have heard or read about how scientists have been researching stem cells and their potential for treating, healing and curing certain ailments.   While I may have heard of stem cell research and cord blood banking a few times over the past decade, there has never been such easy access to this important information and research like there is today.

CBR (Cord Blood Registry) is the world’s largest newborn stem cell company with certain information and resources to help your family’s journey into a future of possibilities.

Who Is CBR?

CBR is a cord blood and cord tissue banking company – but they’re also so much more than that. CBR has tons of helpful tools and resources available to parents! They believe in the power of healthy families and are committed to providing you and your family exceptional services by offering:
  • A state of the art lab and storage facility where your baby’s newborn stem cells are preserved.
  • A team of Certified Genetic Counselors help you learn about newborn stem cells.
  • They’re helping to fund clinical trials to investigate the potential for newborn stem cells to treat conditions that currently have no cure by partnering with reputable research institutions.

Why Should I Care About Cord Blood Banking and Newborn Stem Cells?

  • Your baby’s umbilical cord is comprised of tissue and blood, both of which are rich sources of powerful stem cells.

  • Preserving your newborn’s stem cells may give your child or immediate family member, depending on the condition and other factors, the opportunity to use this resource for current cord blood therapies. There is also potential for future applications like regenerative medicine.

My oldest is twenty-seven-years old.  When Samantha was born there was no discussion on stem cell research that I could recall.  When my son Richie was born in 2002, I had heard about cord blood banking, but no information was offered to me by son’s pediatrician or the hospital where he was born. The information provided to mothers-to-be back then was marginal and vague. Had I known then what I know now about stem cell research and preserving my baby’s cord blood, I would certainly have reconsidered this option. The number of children diagnosed with autism seems to be on the rise. As a mother of a teenager with autism, I find the research of the most recent CBR-funded trial very intriguing.

Exciting News in Autism Research

It is an exciting time for members of the autism community.  Many individuals living with autism, like my son Richie, struggle with the inability to communicate effectively with others, socialization, motor impulsivity – a condition causing involuntary movement, sensory disorders, and other issues.  These issues often lead to anxiety, depression, isolation, aggression and/or self-injurious behavior. Recently, results from a CBR funded study were published. Researchers at the Sutter Medical Center evaluated cord blood as a potential treatment for autism, all of the participants of the study had their cord blood preserved with CBR.  The study found that the use of a child’s own cord blood was safe in children with Autism, which is a step in the right direction. More research is needed to understand if cord blood will help children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To learn more about the study click here or watch this video.
