This month Netflix released a new family featured film called “Dog Gone.” It’s a movie about a young man, Fielding, and his journey in self-discovery as a college graduate. In a moment of spontaneity, he brings a dog named Gonker into his life that impacts the lives of his family, friends and community in unexpected ways.
My family and I watched this film, and while I will admit, I won’t pass on a film that features my childhood heartthrob, Rob Lowe, who is featured in the film as Fielding’s dad – but I was drawn to the storyline that inspires hope, faith, and love. The love between father and son, the love between mother and family, and the love between man and his best friend.
The lengths this family goes to for the love of a family dog is unprecedented. They took the words, “Don’t Give Up Hope,” to a level way beyond the ordinary use of a daily punchline. They brought belief of the impossible to possible in their immediate community and then our entire nation. I laughed, I cried and I got sucked into the emotional ties leading to the family’s outcome and what was to be the fate of the family dog named Gonker. Gonker, a dog, who unbeknownst to him or the family, would have the ability to restore relationships, bring a community together and rebirth hope on a national level. Sorry, I won’t be offering any spoilers in this post!
However, I will add that the film, which is also based on a true story, adding an element of authenticity for the heart-warming movie, also illuminates the kind of community bonds we all long for and work towards. A community who cares and volunteers to help their fellow citizens in acts of kindness, both random and intentional.
When the mood for a feel-good film strikes, break out some pop-corn, try to gather your loved ones and and check-out the movie for yourself. You won’t be disappointed in this soon to be a favorite for all four-legged friends!
