The 5TH Annual Hispanic CREO Summit Champions Education Reform on a National Scale

When the opportunity to attend this event was first presented to me, I jumped on it.  I knew I would have to reschedule a few things in order to be able to attend, and I’m so glad I did.  The annual two day event did not disappoint. The Hispanic CREO (Council for Reform in Educational Options) recognizes the struggles faced by many Hispanic families today. The Hispanic CREO understands the barriers that hinder academic success in Hispanic students that inevitably leads to decreased graduation rates.  They address these areas by promoting meaningful parent involvement.
The objective is to identify parent leaders and work collaboratively with other parent and education agencies. The goal is to increase academic achievement in Hispanic students. The leading strategy places great emphasis on ensuring parents are educated and well-informed on school processes and education reform.  The more parents understand the options and services available to them (and that they are entitled to), the better choices they will make when it comes to their child’s education. They also serve as their schools strongest ally and advocate for faculty and administrative support.
This agency’s mission is one I hold dear to my heart.  I have always been a supporter of parent involvement and creating strong bonds between home, school and community leaders. It was no surprise to me when I attended this event that it would be informative and enlightening.  However, I admit I wasn’t expecting to be treated to live singers and dancers playing classic folk music while waiting on the registrant line in the lobby. That was a splendid surprise and I loved it!

The Summit’s welcome lunch reception kicked off with words of inspiration from HCREO Board Member, Ricky Vescovacci and Julio Fuentes, CEO of HCREO.  Our keynote speaker featured Television Journalist, Maria Elvira Salazar, who delivered a sensational speech on the important role Media plays in Education Choice.  The agenda included a lineup of highly acclaimed experts from across the country, sharing best practices and successful models that include a strong component for mobilizing parents, educators, and community leaders into key players in education reform.

One of the most compelling statements made that day was from Julio Fuentes, CEO, Hispanic CREO:

“All under-privileged students have the right to access quality education that meets their needs.”

Indeed they do, and the Hispanic CREO works hard to make certain this happens.
