Think Spring Cleaning with Goodwill Intentions!

Your Spring Cleaning tasks could mean Goodwill Career Creations!

It is spring cleaning season! It's the time of year that gets us doing chores that aren't part of our normal cleaning routines. If you're anything like me, it's time to clean the china cabinet, get the oven back to its original shine, and start going through our closets and drawers to fish out all the clothes that we've outgrown or just stopped wearing over six months ago! But what if we could do our spring cleaning and donate to a good cause at the same time?
Over the past several years, most of us have had a family member, friend, acquaintance struggle in this economy.  Either they have lost a job or struggled to find employment. And if you don't know someone personally, really, all you have to do is turn on the TV or pull up social media to see the struggle. It is real.

Goodwill’s career centers, training programs and staffing operations give people the resources, skills and confidence that changes thousands of lives each year.

So how can you help to be a part of this growth and effort in your own community? It’s easy! Donate to Goodwill = create jobs!
Now that my family is in Spring Cleaning Fever, our quick growing boys will have to go through their closets and collect all the clothes they don't wear, as well as all the toys that haven't seen the light of day for months! We box them up and take them to our local Goodwill center. Here are a few of my top-favorite spring cleaning rituals and tips:
  • Garbage Disposal Cleanse: I don't want to think about the gross grime that sticks around in there.  Still although it isn't on my mind regularly it needs to be cleaned! I use a cup of lemon juice, a teaspoon of salt and a quarter cup of crushed ice. The lemon helps to remove bad odors, the salt and crushed ice help with removing any remaining residue.
  • Stop saving for the miraculous weight-loss: I had to learn to stop saving clothes that didn't fit - for the day would come that I would lose the weight and fit right back into clothes that I wore ten years ago. It was getting ridiculous. Did I really think I'd want to wear those outdated blouses even if I did lose the weight? I now just get them out of my over stuffed drawers and packed closet.
  • Kids who won't part with toys: This has more to do with control over their belongings than anything else. I always start by asking the boys to help donate to other kids who need help from us. I ask them what they would like to donate. They usually come up with a decent pile on their own!

Thanks to the programs and support services made possible by donations of clothes and household items, Goodwill helped place more than 312,000 people in jobs in the United States and Canada in 2015 – that’s one person finding a job every 23 seconds of every business day.

Why do I donate? Because what I may not want or have use for may be perfect for someone else! If we have perfectly good items that can be loved by someone else, why not help our community? If you are not sure where your local Goodwill is, you can use the Goodwill Locator App available for Android and iOS devices and at http://www.goodwill.org/ (click “Explore Our Map” on the homepage). Simply input the items you’re donating to calculate the number of hours of career counseling, on-the-job training, résumé preparation, financial planning classes, and other services you’ve helped provide people facing challenges finding employment. When jobs thrive, communities thrive.

Last year, nearly 2 million people engaged in face-to-face Goodwill services to advance in their careers. More than 35 million people accessed education, training, mentoring and online learning tools offered by Goodwill virtually to strengthen their skills and gain industry-recognized credentials.

We have done our part! Now it is time for you to do yours! Tag us on your social media posts with a photo of your Goodwill donations using #DonateStuffCreateJobs.
This social good post is part of a Bloggin' Mamas campaign. I feel passionately about contributing and donating to community needs and was not compensated for this post.

I'm a Goodwill regular - both as a donor and a thrift shopper for DIY projects. Love Goodwill!

Spring cleaning with Goodwill intentions adds an extra layer of purpose and impact. By donating gently used items to Goodwill, we declutter our spaces while giving back to the community. Embrace the spirit of generosity and make a positive difference this spring through mindful cleaning and supporting a worthy cause.
